Understanding Brokerage & Other Charges (Equity)
When you buy or sell stocks in the Indian market, several charges are levied in addition to the price of the shares. Understanding these charges is crucial for calculating your actual profit or loss.
Common Charges Explained
Brokerage: Fee charged by your stockbroker for executing trades. Can be a percentage of the transaction value or a flat fee per order. Discount brokers often charge lower fees (e.g., ₹20/order or even zero for delivery).
STT (Securities Transaction Tax): A direct tax levied by the government on transactions executed on stock exchanges. Rates differ for intraday (0.025% on sell side) and delivery trades (0.1% on both buy and sell, though typically shown on sell side in contract notes).
Exchange Transaction Charges: Fees charged by the stock exchanges (NSE, BSE) for using their platform. Usually a small percentage of the turnover.
GST (Goods and Services Tax): Levied at 18% on the sum of Brokerage and Exchange Transaction Charges.
SEBI Turnover Fees: A small fee charged by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on the transaction turnover.
Stamp Duty: Charged by state governments on the transaction value (rates vary by state, typically very small). *Not included in this simplified calculator.*
DP Charges (Depository Participant): Charged by depositories (CDSL/NSDL) via your DP when shares are debited from your Demat account upon selling delivery shares. Usually a flat fee per scrip per day. *Not included in this simplified calculator.*
